American Pharoah And The Horse Sex Industrial Complex
The history of horse breeding dates back centuries and is much, much weirder than you can possibly imagine
Now that he has been put out to stud, Pharoah is busy siring what many hope will be the next generation of Triple Crown contenders. While genetics isn’t everything in horse racing, Pharoah’s customers are banking on his championship pedigree to the tune of $200,000 for each of 160 mares he will cover (a horse-person word for “have horse-sex with”) this season.
Stop Overhyping Stem Cells, Say Scientists
Thanks to gushing coverage of athlete stem cell treatments, scientists say the public is becoming badly misinformed
Has
the oversaturated coverage of experimental stem cell treatments on
superstar athletes partially contributed to the undue expectations held
by the public? According to Tim Caulfield, research director of the
Health Law Institute at the University of Alberta and one of the authors
of the new set of guidelines released by the International Society for Stem Cell Research on Thursday, the answer is yes.
The bulk of the ISSCR’s updated guidelines are devoted to the various ethical concerns, oversight, transparency, and best practices for clinical research, but the ISSCR also described the reporting on advances made to stem cell research as “frequently far from ideal.”

This Mathematician Hacked His Way To True Love On OkCupid
Chris McKinlay used big data to hack OkCupid—and became the top match for more than 30,000 women
Chris McKinlay was just like thousands of other graduate students. He
spent most of his nights chiseling away at his PhD thesis—an arcane
treatise on large-scale data processing with supercomputers—living on a
couple hundred dollars per month, sleeping in his cramped cubicle, and
scrolling listlessly through online dating sites in search of love or,
at least, a worthwhile diversion.
That is, until he hacked OkCupid.
McKinlay, frustrated by months of online dating with meager results, began to think about the complex algorithms that OkCupid uses to match compatible users. “The first thing I did was gather a lot of data from OkCupid and mine all that data for patterns,” he told NOVA. But McKinlay’s passing interest in collecting OkCupid data soon evolved into an obsession. “I started using all of my supercomputing time analyzing OkCupid match question data.”

Deported For The Crime Of Checking Her Husband’s Phone
A woman in the United Arab Emirates must pay $41,000 and will be deported because she thought her husband was having an affair
A
woman in the United Arab Emirates must fork over tens of thousands of
dollars and will soon be deported. Her heinous crime? She checked her
husband’s cell phone to see if he cheated on her, according to news reports.
A criminal court in the emirate of Ajman found the unnamed woman guilty of breaching her husband’s privacy when she began to suspect that he was having an affair, Gulf News reported on Wednesday. Her lawyer told the paper she admitted to accessing her spouse’s mobile phone without his permission and uploaded photos to her own device.

$9 Million Online Pharmacy Scheme Lands Cop In Prison
A former Florida cop was behind a faux-online pharmacy that illegally put thousands of narcotic drugs on the streets
A former Florida police officer is heading to prison
for his role in an illegal online pharmacy scheme that he ran with
another officer, nurses, and several pharmacists. The scheme brought in
more than $9 million in revenue in about three years, officials said.
Craig Greer, 43, took part in promoting the online scheme and helped his conspirators launder the money through a brick-and-mortar pharmacy called Discount Pharmacy of Pines, according to officials. Between 2009 and 2012, Greer and his accomplices distributed hundreds of thousands of narcotic pills like hydrocodone, phentermine, Xanax, and codeine to clients across the country.
Greer was sentenced last week to 60 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Richard A. Jones, who told the former officer at sentencing that the conspiracy “pumped into our community an enormous amount of drugs…impacting people you will never see but whose lives and families you destroyed by feeding their addiction.”

Yet Another Weather Record: India Had Its Hottest Day Ever
It's getting hot in here.
Here’s
yet another “record-breaking heat” story for your global warming
scrapbook: an Indian city hit the hottest recorded temperature in that
country’s history: 51 degrees Celsius, or 123.8 degrees Fahrenheit.
India’s previous record, 50.6 degrees, was set in 1956.
The record was set in Phalodi, a small city in the midst of a heat wave that has already killed dozens of people across northern India, according to the BBC. Last year, a heatwave in India killed more than 2300 people.
Of course, extreme weather records driven by climate change aren’t unusual these days. Last month was the warmest April on record on Earth. January 2016 was the warmest January ever recorded. Last summer was the hottest summer on record,
beating the previous record set in 2014. There were record warm
temperatures in cities across America last December, with more than 5,900 daily records for highs and lows set.
