The attack is the latest in a string of ISIS assaults that have killed more than 100 people since Wednesday
ISIS militants killed at least 14 people on Sunday in an attack on a natural gas plant north of Baghdad, Iraqi officials have said. It is the latest in a string of Islamic State attacks that reportedly killed more than 100 people since Wednesday.
Sunday’s assault unfolded at dawn when three car bombs exploded at the gate of the plant, which is located in a rural area north of the Iraqi capital, according to the BBC. Strapped in explosive belts, a half a dozen attackers blew up gas tanks at the facility, the BBC reported.
Firefighters extinguished a blaze caused by the blasts and authorities were working to assess the damage, Iraqi’s Deputy Oil Minister Hamid Younis said in a statement, the Associated Press reported.
ISIS later claimed responsibility for the violence, which was just one in a series of assaults unleashed on Sunday. Three bomb attacks also tore through Baghdad and one took place south of the capital, raising Sunday’s death toll to 29, police told the AP.
The violence comes on the heels of other vicious assaults over the past week. On Wednesday, the terror group claimed responsibility for three car bombings that killed at least 93 people across Baghdad. On Monday, another 13 people were killed when a bomber blew up a minibus. ISIS claimed it was behind the violence, the AP reported.
Iraqi officials have said the attacks are in response to the terror group’s recent losses in Iraq and Syria, where it has been fighting to maintain control of territory.
