From "pineapple" to "Oklahoma," the terms Americans use to ensure consent might surprise you
Pineapple,
banana, orange. Sounds like a pretty cool smoothie order—but, for lots
of people, these are instead ingredients for good sex.
Before you contemplate how someone might painlessly incorporate a pineapple in the bedroom, some clarification: These are among the top safe words used in the United States.
That’s according to the kinky messaging app Whiplr. Along with their particular interests—from spanking to role play—users often list their chosen safe word, which is an agreed-upon word or phrase used to bring the action to a screeching halt. This is especially important in dominance and submission, where there might be feigned resistance.
Well, the Hong Kong-based company did an analysis of tens of thousands of user profiles and found that people’s attempts at protecting sexual consent have a decidedly culinary bent. Among the top 15 terms, six are fruit: pineapple and banana—both in singular and plural—apple, and orange.
A couple of these have made appearances in popular culture. “Pineapple” and “pineapples”—number three and five, respectively—were made famous as safe words during comedian Kevin Hart’s standup routine. “Banana”—number four and, in plural, 15—was used by Lois in an episode of “Family Guy; and Kit Harington, the actor who plays Jon Snow on “Game of Thrones,” reportedly used it as his safe word while filming intense action scenes.
Many people instead go with colors. The top safe word is, predictably, “red,” but there were some less obvious ones: “yellow,” “orange,” and “purple” also made the top 15.
Then there were the more literal choices: “Stop” at number two, “safe word” at number nine, “mercy” at 10, “safe” at 12,” and “no” at 13.
Hands down, though, the most surprising—and delightful—safe word is number 11: “Oklahoma.” As Daniel Sevitt, CCO of Whiplr, said in a press release, “One of the oddest safe words we discovered was ‘Oklahoma’. But then I saw it explained on Reddit that ‘once you’ve hit Oklahoma, you know the good times are over.'”
Without further ado, the full list of Americans’ most-used safe words:
1.) Red
2.) Stop
3.) Pineapple
4.) Banana
5.) Pineapples
6.) Apple
7.) Yellow
8.) Orange
9.) Safe Word
10.) Mercy
11.) Oklahoma
12.) Safe
13.) No
14.) Purple
15.) Bananas
