The attack in Baghdad was done in revenge for the recent killing of a top ISIS lieutenant
ISIS
said it was behind a car bomb that exploded in a Shiite district of
Baghdad earlier Wednesday, killing at least 52 people and wounding
dozens more, according to Reuters. In
a statement released and circulated on social media, the group says a
suicide bomber named Abu Sliman al-Ansari was sent into teeming Sadr
City to target a gathering of Shiite militias.
ISIS reportedly sent a pickup truck rigged with explosives into the overcrowded Shiite area and detonated it. Sources told Reuters the explosion was near a beauty salon, and that many of the victims were women including several brides preparing for ceremonies. The bodies of two men at an adjacent barber shop were said to belong to two grooms also getting ready for their weddings.
Abu Ali al-Anbari, who was killed in Syria in March in a U.S. military raid.
According to UN figures released this month, 741 Iraqis have been killed and over 1,300 injured in terror attacks in the month of April. That number however, is down from March, in which 1,119 were killed and 1,561 were injured.
